What is retail and eCommerce software development?
Retail and eCommerce software development builds the storefronts, marketplaces, store systems and order platforms that run modern retail. It covers builds on Shopify Plus, Magento, BigCommerce or custom stacks, headless frontends, multi-vendor marketplaces, B2B portals, mobile commerce apps, and integrations with POS, ERP, OMS and payment infrastructure.

Shopify Plus vs headless vs Magento

Headless commerce and platform choice

Start on Shopify Plus unless you have a reason not to. Go headless when the storefront itself is the differentiator.

Try Style: virtual try-on and size advice for fashion retailers

Retailers add a Try This On button through the Shopify app, the WooCommerce plugin or a JavaScript SDK, without writing code. Shoppers get a recommended size and a photorealistic try-on from one photo, and each try-on is tracked through to add to cart.

How we work

eCommerce development process, from discovery to a store that takes orders

Two-week sprints with a demo every Friday, and one engineering manager who owns delivery.

  1. 01

    Discovery

We write catalog size, channel mix, payment regions and the integration list into a scope and sprint plan.

    Week 1
  2. 02

    Catalog and integration mapping

We map products, SKUs, variants, tax rules and shipping zones, using payload samples from your ERP, OMS and PIM.

    Week 2
  3. 03

    Sprint build

Each sprint has goals, a burndown and a shared backlog, and we report to your team weekly.

    2-week sprints
  4. 04

    Launch and hardening

We load test, run a security review and soft launch, then spend four weeks hardening before a clean handover. Search and personalisation often come next, through AI for retail.

Secure checkout and customer data handling

We scope payment edge cases and inventory sync failures in week one, before they can break a launch.

We handle customer and order data under EU rules for European shoppers.

Questions buyers ask

Retail software development FAQs

We will answer any other question on the call.

How much does eCommerce software development cost?

Every build starts with a free discovery sprint. A web storefront or B2B portal starts from $11,999, a mobile commerce app from $9,999 and an enterprise commerce platform from $24,999. Catalog size, integrations and the platform set the fixed quote.

Should we use Shopify, Magento or a headless build?

Start on Shopify Plus unless you have a reason not to. It suits most D2C brands and is the quickest of the three to build. Go headless on Next.js when the storefront experience is the product, at a higher build and upkeep cost, and choose Magento or Adobe Commerce for complex B2B catalogs or a team already running it. Our eCommerce development page covers each platform option in more detail.

Can you connect our POS, ERP and inventory?

Yes. We connect POS systems, NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics and custom OMS platforms through REST, SOAP or middleware. Order, inventory, customer and pricing syncs are mapped in week two, so stock levels match online and in store.

How do you handle peak traffic?

We load test against your expected peak before launch, cache catalog and content pages at the edge, and queue order writes so checkout keeps working under load. On Shopify Plus, Shopify scales the hosting. Headless and Magento builds run on autoscaling infrastructure sized during discovery.

Can you add AI product recommendations and search?

Yes. We add AI product recommendations, typo-tolerant semantic search on Algolia, Elasticsearch or Typesense, and shopping assistants that answer from your catalog and help docs. Each feature is measured against your current conversion and search exit rates.

Can you migrate our store without losing SEO?

Yes. We map every old URL to its new one with 301 redirects, carry over titles, meta descriptions and structured data, and keep catalog URLs stable where the platform allows. The switchover plan is written before code starts, and we watch Search Console for crawl errors after launch.

What happens after launch?

Every build includes four weeks of hardening. After that, a monthly retainer covers support, feature work and platform updates, or we hand everything to your team.

Do you sign an NDA and IP assignment?

Yes. A mutual NDA before discovery and full IP assignment in the master agreement. All code, designs and assets are yours from day one.
