What energy software development covers

The platforms that measure, analyse and manage energy use.

What is energy software development?
Energy software development is the engineering of the platforms that measure, analyse and manage how energy is produced, supplied and used. It covers energy management platforms, consumption analytics from meter and building data, customer and partner portals, field service and asset maintenance apps, forecasting models, and integrations with metering, billing and ERP systems.
Where energy software goes wrong

Four reasons utility software development projects stall

Meter data in a dozen formats

Interval data arrives as CSV exports, portal downloads and API feeds, each with its own units, time zones and gaps. We map every source to one data model, with agreed rules for estimated and missing readings.

Reports nobody can act on

Consumption charts show what happened and stop there, so the customer still has to work out what to change. We pair each report with savings recommendations, as Rec Analyzer does for electricity, gas and heat.

Portals designed for analysts

Municipal staff, business park managers and company contacts each need a different view of the same data. We design role-based views and multilingual interfaces from the first sprint.

Assets serviced on a calendar

Fixed maintenance schedules miss the faults that cause outages and emergency site visits. We build models that read sensor and SCADA history and flag equipment before it fails.

Energy services

Energy software we build

From one consumption report to a platform for every site you manage.

Energy management platforms

Platforms that track electricity, gas and heat use across buildings and sites, set targets and report savings.

Meter data analytics

Interval meter data turned into benchmarks, anomaly alerts and reports your customers can read.

Customer and partner portals

Self-service portals let customers check usage, tariffs and documents and send requests in the languages they use.

See web application development

Asset maintenance and field service

Failure prediction for pumps, transformers and turbines, and field apps that send technicians out with the right job details.

Renewables and forecasting

We forecast solar and wind generation from weather data, and demand for planning and purchasing.

See machine learning development

Billing and ERP integration

Usage and asset data synced with SAP, Microsoft Dynamics or Salesforce through their published APIs, so finance and operations read the same numbers.

Segments we serve

Energy management platform and utility software by segment

A supplier's customer portal and a utility's asset model start from different data. These are the four we see most.

Energy suppliers and retailers

Customer portals show usage insights and tariff comparisons, linked to billing.

Meter→Usage model→Portal→Billing

Utilities and network operators

We build asset registers, outage reporting and maintenance planning from sensor and SCADA history.

Sensors→Asset model→Alert→Work order

Energy consultancies and municipalities

We analyse consumption across buildings, business parks and companies and produce a savings report for each.

Site data→Analysis→Report→Savings plan

Renewables developers

Owners and investors get generation forecasts, site monitoring and reporting. EV charging networks draw on our automotive software work too.

How we work

Start with one dataset, then build the platform around it

Energy data projects most often stall on data access, so the first weeks go into getting meter and asset data flowing. Work on site with your equipment stays with your team, and ours runs on 4 to 5 hours of daily overlap.

Rec Analyzer: an energy consumption analysis web app for the Netherlands

ScalaCode built Rec Analyzer for a smart energy solutions provider in the Netherlands. The web app collects data from municipalities, business parks and companies, calculates their electricity, gas and heat consumption, and produces reports with energy-saving recommendations.

Questions buyers ask

Energy software development FAQs

We will answer any other question on the call.

How much does energy software development cost?

Every build starts with a free discovery sprint. A customer portal or analytics web app starts from $11,999, custom software from $9,999 and an enterprise platform from $24,999. Dedicated engineers start from $1,799 a month, full-time.

Can you work with our smart meter and SCADA data?

Yes, through the exports, APIs or databases you already have. We map units, intervals and time zones in discovery and agree how estimated and missing readings appear in reports. We build on read access to SCADA historians or exports and leave control systems with your operations team.

Can you integrate with SAP or our billing system?

Yes. We connect SAP, Microsoft Dynamics and Salesforce through their published APIs. Billing systems without an API connect through file exchange or a small integration service, agreed in discovery.

How do you handle GDPR for household energy data?

GDPR controls are written into scope during discovery, covering what personal data is stored, where it is hosted, who can see it and how long it is kept. Consumption data linked to a household counts as personal data in the EU, so portals get role-based access and audit logs from the first release.

Should we buy an energy management platform or build one?

Buy when standard dashboards cover your customers and the product supports your meters out of the box. Build when the platform is part of what you sell, when your tariffs or data sources fall outside the product's model, or when per-site licence fees grow faster than revenue. Some teams start with a custom portal on top of a bought product.

Can AI forecast energy demand or solar generation?

Yes, with enough history. Forecasting models combine past consumption or output with weather, calendar and site data, and we measure them against a simple baseline before anyone relies on them. Planners keep the final say.

How long does an energy management platform take to build?

A first report or portal flow is the first release to reach staging, once data access is in place. A multi-site platform with portals, forecasting and integrations ships in stages, on a schedule fixed in writing after discovery.

Who owns the code and data?

You do. IP assignment is in the contract, NDAs are standard, and the code, data and cloud accounts are yours from day one.
