Chalenj: a gamified training app for deskless workers
ScalaCode built Chalenj, a progressive web app that turns training and operating procedures into short, gamified challenges for people who don't work at a desk. Authors write the challenges, admins run the platform, and workers open their tasks on a phone by scanning a QR code.

Chalenj LLC wanted workers in the field to remember procedures and follow them step by step. Its idea was to take a standard operating procedure and break it into small challenges that a worker completes on the job, which makes tasks easier to manage and helps the steps stick.
Why training didn't stick for deskless workers
Remembering the steps
Workers found it hard to remember detailed procedures and the order the steps go in.
Long, rigid training
Traditional training took a long time and was hard to fit around the work itself.
Keeping up with change
Whenever a procedure or a tool changed, workers had trouble adjusting to the new way of doing it.
A gamified training app with three roles
We built a progressive web app with separate roles for authors, admins and workers. It runs on AWS EC2 and RDS, and MongoDB stores the data.

Author module
Authors create micro-actions, group them into challenges and edit them whenever a procedure changes. Workers see the update straight away.

Admin role
Admins look after the data, the user roles and the notifications that go out across the system.

Worker access by QR code
A worker scans a QR code with their phone and the right task or training opens.

Micro-action engine
Each task is split into small actions that a worker can finish one at a time.

Tracking and reports
Reports show how each person engages with the app and which challenges they have completed.

Flexible challenges
Authors can create as many challenges as they need, and completion can be checked in several different ways.
Procedures turned into challenges workers finish on their phones
Authors turn a procedure into a challenge and can change it the moment the procedure changes. Workers pick up their tasks from a QR code, and the team can see who has completed what.
